During an intense exercise session, metabolic by-products, including lactic acid, ammonia, and heat, accumulate in the horse’s muscles.

The horse’s body cannot clear these accumulations at a pace that is produced, and this leads to a build-up of hydrogen (H⁺) ions in the muscles and in the bloodstream, causing muscle acidosis, which contributes ultimately to muscle fatigue, limiting performance. Significant muscle acidosis leads to muscle fatigue.

Studies in horses show that muscle carnosine is increased significantly following supplementation with a bioavailable source of histidine and Beta-alanine (ProCarnosine®).

Beta-alanine is a naturally occurring non-essential amino acid.
